Questions You Should Ask your Dentist

It is a truth universally acknowledged that not everyone looks forward to a trip to the dentist. In fact, even a routine cleaning appointment is something that can cause as much dread as seeing a clown at a children’s birthday party.

Cleaning

But what is it that causes such tension and nervousness when even thinking about going to the dentist? While there may be many answers to this question, we feel the main reason is that patients not only don’t know enough about their oral health, but they don’t quite fully understand what a valuable resource their dentist can be. Because your dentist is someone that you are entrusting with your health and well-being, it is natural, and even encouraged, to ask them questions about what is happening during your appointment, but also, what you can be doing at home to improve your oral hygiene.

Here are some questions you should be asking your dentist during your next appointment:

What foods or drinks

Your diet is so important not only for your total health and wellness, but it also has a large impact on your oral hygiene. During your next visit, you should not only ask your dentist if your mouth looks healthy, but inquire as to what foods and drinks are recommended to decrease your risk for cavities.

Can I wear headphones?

We get it: sometimes the sound of the equipment we use can be intimidating and can cause increased anxiety. Whether it’s a simple cleaning or a more complex procedure, feel free to ask your dentist if you can wear headphones during your visit. It’s a wonderful way to relax and shift focus.

Can we have a signal?

Lack of communication when you are in the patient’s chair is often frustrating; after all, it’s hard to speak to your dentist when you have things in your mouth! If this is something that makes you nervous, set up a hand signal with your dentist as a way to express if you are uncomfortable with what’s going on.

Although a routine visit to the dentist is something that can fill some people with dread and anxiety, there’s no denying that this is an absolutely essential appointment that must be made and kept. Asking your dentist questions about what they are doing and what you can be doing to improve your oral health is a wonderful way to ease any anxiety you may have about a visit to the dentist.
